President Dr. Rashad Al-Alimi, President of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), has formally called on United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to support an international move through the UN Security Council to designate the Houthi militias as a terrorist organization.

He also called for the enforcement of the arms embargo against the militias and measures to cut off their sources of funding and arms supplies.

The President further urged that their supporters and those responsible for their violations be held accountable.

The call came during a telephone conversation with Guterres to discuss the latest national developments in light of the terrorist escalation led by the Houthi militias and its implications for international peace and security.

President Al-Alimi briefed the UN Secretary-General on the latest Houthi terrorist activities, including missile and drone attacks targeting state institutions and civilian facilities. The UN Secretary General was briefed on the expansion of attacks on cities and villages, and the continued siege of Taiz city and shelling of its residential neighborhoods. He noted that these acts of terrorism had resulted in thousands of deaths and injuries, including civilians and children who had been forced into combat on the front lines.

The President noted that the Yemeni government had acted responsibly toward initiatives and agreements aimed at ending the war, while the militias had responded to these efforts with further escalation. He said the militias had exploited truces and political efforts to regroup and continue their violations, including the continued detention of more than 70 UN personnel and the abduction of thousands of innocent citizens.

President Al-Alimi stressed that the current phase requires the international community to move beyond condemnation toward the full implementation of international legitimacy resolutions. He underscored the importance of ending the Houthi threat, lifting the sieges imposed on cities, and opening roads and safe corridors for civilians and the delivery of food and medical supplies.

He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a just and lasting peace based on international legitimacy resolutions, respect for Yemen’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, and the restoration of its national institutions.

For his part, UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned Houthi attacks inside Yemen and across its borders. He expressed his rejection of the continued detention of UN personnel and public-sector employees, as well as all violations of international law.

Guterres also affirmed the United Nations’ commitment to providing stronger support to the Yemeni government and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in confronting all threats.
