President Al-Alimi Meets with U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State

President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, President of the Presidential Leadership Council, met on Saturday with Mr. Timothy Lenderking, the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, which commenced on Friday.

The meeting discussed bilateral relations between the two friendly countries and the latest developments in Yemen, including the Interconnected challenges facing the government, particularly the economic, service, and humanitarian crises exacerbated by the terrorist Houthi militia’s attacks on oil facilities and maritime shipping.

The discussions also addressed the risks posed by the continued threats of the Iran-backed Houthi militia to regional and international security, as well as its severe human rights violations. Additionally, the meeting emphasized the need for increased pressure to secure the unconditional release of UN staff and humanitarian and civil society workers and to ensure a serious engagement with comprehensive peace efforts based on agreed-upon references, particularly UN Security Council Resolution 2216.

During the meeting, President Al-Alimi praised the U.S. official’s efforts during his tenure as the U.S. Special Envoy to Yemen, wishing him success in his new position and looking forward to working closely with him to strengthen bilateral relations at various levels.

The President also welcomed the U.S. administration’s decision to re-designate the Houthi militia as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, stressing the importance of the international community adopting similar sanctions as a peaceful means to dry up the militia’s sources of funding and arms supply and to enforce relevant international legitimacy resolutions.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Yahya Al-Shuaibi, Director of the Presidency Office, and Abdulaziz Al-Mukhlafi, the President’s Economic Advisor.
