President Al-Alimi Discusses with Russian FM Developments in Yemen and the Region

President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, President of the Presidential Leadership Council, met today, Friday, with Mr. Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. He was accompanied by Council Member Dr. Abdullah Al-Alimi.

Lavrov conveyed to President Al-Alimi the greetings of President Vladimir Putin and his congratulations to Yemen’s leadership, government, and people on the 63rd anniversary of the September 26 Revolution.

The meeting reviewed the longstanding relations between Yemen and the Russian Federation and discussed opportunities to expand and strengthen them in various fields. The talks also built on the outcomes of President Al-Alimi’s fruitful visit to Moscow last May.

President Al-Alimi praised the distinguished bilateral ties and Russia’s support for Yemen’s constitutional legitimacy. He also commended Moscow’s efforts to promote peace and stability, end the suffering of the Yemeni people, and its consistent condemnation of terrorist threats to international shipping lanes and global security.

Discussions also touched on preparations for the first Russia–Arab Summit, scheduled for October with Yemen’s participation.

President Al-Alimi briefed the Russian Foreign Minister on the latest developments in Yemen, including the destructive war waged by the Houthi militias. He highlighted their attacks on shipping routes, violations of human rights, and the abduction and disappearance of dozens of UN and international organization staff.

The President reaffirmed the Council’s and the government’s commitment to a just, comprehensive, and sustainable peace, in line with nationally, regionally, and internationally agreed references, particularly UN Security Council Resolution 2216.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Shaya’ Al-Zindani, Yemen’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ambassador Abdullah Al-Saadi, Yemen’s Permanent Representative to the UN, and Major General Saleh Al-Maqaleh, Director of the Presidential Office. From the Russian side, Mr. Sergey V. Vershinin, Deputy Foreign Minister and Vasily A. Nebenzya, Permanent Representative to the UN were present.
